How do I request a rare book?

Visit Primo and Sign in Locate the book ( How to search for a book? ) Go to Find & Request. Click Request: followed by  If there is more than one copy of the book you can click Specify Issue/copy and select the copy you want.  Select the appropriate pickup location. Rare books are not eligible for Inter-Site request and may only be consulted in the Libraries they are held in. They may not be borrowed. Add any comments Click Send Request You will receive an email when your book is ready for viewing. Visit the Enquiry desk in the Library where the book is held and you will be taken to the rare book viewing area. You may only take a notebook and pencil into the viewing room.

How do I use the microfiche / microfilm reader?

This page provides instruction on using Canon Roll/Fiche Carrier 200 reader.

 
  • Switch the reader and the printer on. The printer power button is on its right side and the reader power button is on the front

  • Move the film carrier to the back until it stops. If it is not pushed all the way to the back it will not work.

  • Carefully pull the lens out - do not force it
  • Pull the fiche carrier towards the middle

  • It should look like the picture below:
  • Make sure the dot on the large wheel on the external control panel is aligned with the dot on the panel itself
  • Fit the lens. Take the lens marked X16-32 out of its box

  • Carefully push the lens into the holder - make sure the metal wires are aligned or it will not work

  • You may need to lift the lens out of the holder slightly so that it doesn't catch the edge of the glass plates

  • Push the lens back into the bracket firmly until it clicks
  • Pull the carrier forwards until the glass lifts so that the film is positioned under the lens

  • Place microfiche in between the two pieces of glass. Put it in upside down and back to front so the text reads right to left and up to down

  • Push the panel back under the lens to display the microfiche on the screen
  • Move the panel around to display the part of the image you want to view

  • When you have finished:
    • Remove the microfiche from the glass panel
    • Take the lens out
    • Push the carrier back
    • Push the lens back in
    • Switch off the printer and the reader

Using the control panel to view the microfiche

  • Many buttons are duplicated on the reader itself. Please use the external panel if not confident.

CONTROL

The Control wheel allows you to zoom in and out, rotate the image or to adjust the focus (located on the side of the panel)

SELECT

Allows you to switch between ZOOM, FOCUS and ROTATE options (located on the side of the panel)

 

This section of the control panel indicates which of the above options is currently selected

Printout options

This section controls the printout options. When printing something, make sure the middle option is selected by pressing the button the required amount of times

Portrait to landscape indicator

By default the printer prints the portrait selection off the screen. If you wish to print the landscape selection press this button once so it lights up. The printer will now print the area within the landscape selection.

Rotate image counterclockwise

Press this button once to rotate the image on the screen 90° anticlockwise

Rotate image clockwise

Press this button once to rotate the image on the screen 90° clockwise

Print option

Press this button once to print the area within the selection on the screen

Error code screen

This screen displays the error codes in case an error occurs. Please refer to the error codes section below for more information

Contrast setting

This allows you to change the contrast of the printout, however using FOCUS setting usually allows you to achieve better results

Film movement control

The large wheel on the control panel allows you to fast forward and rewind the film on the roll to move between different pages/slides. If the motor starts spinning too fast return the wheel to its original position to stop the film and rewind if necessary.

Error codes and troubleshooting

If an error occurs its code will be shown on the error code monitor on the control panel.

How do I book a study room in the Hugh Owen Library and the Workstation?

Book study rooms using Outlook (desktop version):

To book a meeting room in Outlook:

  • Open Outlook Calendar:  Launch the Outlook application and navigate to your calendar view.
  • Create a New Meeting:  Click on "New Meeting" or "New Event" to start a new meeting request.
  • Add Attendees and Details:  Fill in the meeting subject, invite attendees, and specify the date and time.

Access Room Finder:  Click on "Rooms..." or "Room Finder" (the location field may also have a drop-down arrow to reveal more options).  Locate and Select Room: Use the Room Finder to browse available rooms, search by name, or filter by location, capacity, or features. 

Add to Meeting: Once you've chosen a room, select it and click "OK" to add it to your meeting request.

Send the Invite: Review all meeting details and click "Send" to invite attendees and book the room.

You will receive confirmation via e-mail that the room has been booked.

Cancel a Room booking in Outlook:

  • To cancel a meeting room booking in Outlook: Locate the meeting
  • Open your Outlook calendar and find the meeting you want to cancel.
  • Open the meeting: Double-click the meeting to open it in its entirety.
  • Cancel the meeting: If you organized the meeting, you'll find a "Cancel Meeting" button (or "Cancel" for recurring meetings).
  • If you didn't organize the meeting, you'll need to contact the meeting organizer and request that they cancel it.
  • Send the cancellation:  After clicking "Cancel Meeting", you'll be prompted to send a cancellation notice.
  • Confirmation: Once the cancellation is sent, the meeting room booking will be removed from your calendar and the room's calendar.

To ensure fairness of use, bookings should be made: once a day for a maximum of four hours up to one week in advance.

Take it to the Library enquiry desk. We will assess whether it is in a fit state to be returned to the shelves or if we are able to repair it. If not, you will be invoiced for the cost of a replacement.

Does the Library charge fines?

Yes, for the following reasons;

  • If you do not return an item that has been requested by another user you will be blocked from borrowing any other items until it has been returned. Once the item is 14 days overdue, it will be regarded as Lost and you will be invoiced the full cost of a replacement.
  • If you do not return your loans when your library account ends, you will be invoiced the full cost of a replacement.
  • If you do not return your loans or contact us when they have reached the maximum loan period they will be regarded as Lost and you will be invoiced the full cost of a replacement.  
  • If you are unable to return your item by the date and time due, please contact us

Where do I ask about lost property in the library?

Is there a locker I can use in the library?

There are lockers located on each floor of the Hugh Owen Library for students to use on a first come first served basis.

These lockers:

  • are free to use
  • are loaned on an Aber Card
  • are available for one week loan which will auto renew for up to 12 months or until your library borrowing account ends, whichever is sooner.

If you wish to make use of one of these lockers please ask at the Enquiry Desk on Level D

Who was Sir Hugh Owen?

If you are in Aberystwyth: You can return library books/DVDS ( not equipment ) using one of the following options:

Inside the Hugh Owen Library during opening hours ( and through the vacation)

Through the Book Return bin outside Y Sgubor, Fferm Penglais (available 24/7):

 

Through the Book Return Bin inside the Workstation in town (available 24/7 and accessible to staff and students only):
